During carrier strike group exercises, SPY-1 radar operators aboard USS Princeton tracked unusual contacts over several days. On 14 November two F/A-18Fs were vectored to one of them. Four aviators observed a white object with no visible lifting surfaces above an area of disturbed water. A subsequent sortie recorded the infrared footage known as FLIR1.

Official position

The US Department of Defense confirmed in 2020 that the footage is authentic Navy material and classified the event as unidentified. Confirming a video's authenticity is not identifying the object.

Alternative hypotheses

  • A combination of independent events: unusual radar traces (possibly related to SPY-1 software issues in that period), an independent surface phenomenon, and an object observed at badly misjudged range.
  • A balloon or drifting object with misjudged range and size — hard to reconcile with the account of the object reacting to a manoeuvre.
  • A domestic aircraft in a classified programme.
  • Unknown technology.

The structure of the case: five layers that must be kept apart

The largest error in the Nimitz literature is treating this as one continuous sensor chain. These are five separate layers, of differing evidential value:

  1. SPY-1 radar traces in the preceding days — source: operator accounts, not a raw recording.
  2. The visual observation by Fravor and Dietrich — four witnesses, sworn testimony.
  3. Radar reacquisition after loss of contact — source: an account relayed to the pilot by a controller.
  4. The FLIR1 recording — authentic, confirmed by the DoD, made on a subsequent sortie.
  5. Later reconstructions and analyses — a secondary layer.

Layers 2 and 4 concern different flights. No publicly available material establishes that the object Fravor saw and the object on FLIR1 are the same object.

What is genuinely strong here

Four trained naval aviators, in two aircraft, in excellent visibility, described the same object consistently. Fravor testified to it under oath before Congress. Add independent radar reporting from the ship and an authentic infrared recording.

No single banal explanation covers that whole structure.

What must not be presented as measurement

“60 miles in under a minute.” This is a distance relayed to the pilot by radio, divided by a duration estimated from memory. To treat it as a speed measurement you must assume both radar indications referred to the same object, that there was no loss and reacquisition of track, and that the time estimate is accurate. None of those assumptions can be checked today.

“A descent from 80,000 ft in under a second.” This comes from a radar operator’s account, not from a recording.

“The object entered the ocean.” Fravor himself testified that they did not see the object underwater — they saw a surface disturbance. The popular “transmedium” version elaborates on what the witness did not say.

AARO’s position

AARO leadership stated publicly that the office does not hold additional data enabling a full analysis of this event. That is neither a debunking nor a confirmation — it is a statement that the source material is insufficient to resolve the case.

What would settle it

The raw SPY-1 track file from USS Princeton. APG-73 data from both aircraft. ATFLIR metadata with range. INS/GPS aircraft positions. Synchronised timestamps. The full communications recording.

With those, the case closes one way or the other within weeks. Without them, Nimitz remains the best-attested and worst-measured event in modern UAP history.
