A series of vivid green fireballs observed over the most sensitive nuclear installations in the United States. The phenomenon was taken seriously enough that a dedicated observation programme, Project Twinkle, was established with cameras and theodolites.

Official position

Project Twinkle ended without resolution. The prevailing hypothesis was unusual bolide activity.

Alternative hypotheses

  • Bolides with high copper content, producing the characteristic green — a hypothesis its own proponent rejected on trajectory grounds.
  • Electrical phenomena in the upper atmosphere.
  • An observer-concentration effect: nuclear installations had round-the-clock guards looking at the sky, so they recorded what nobody elsewhere was watching for.

The first “nuclear connection”

This is where one of the most durable motifs in the field is born: UAP cluster around nuclear installations. The motif returns at Malmstrom in 1967, at Australia’s Maralinga, and in AARO reporting in the 2020s.

Settling it requires stating the alternative honestly. Nuclear installations are simultaneously the sites with the densest observer coverage, the best sensors and the lowest threshold for reporting an anomaly. The phenomenon may therefore cluster around them because something is interested in them, or because they are the only places where anyone is systematically watching and reporting.

The available data cannot separate those two explanations. That is not an evasion — it is a real limit of this corpus.

Project Twinkle

An important precedent: the US government deployed dedicated measuring equipment to measure a UAP phenomenon. The programme gathered little usable data, largely through underfunding and poor station placement. The same problem — the equipment exists, but not where and when it is needed — returns at the Hessdalen expedition of 1984.
