Nine minutes of IR studied for two years by CEFAA — and solved by a flight plan
A Chilean Navy helicopter recorded nine minutes of infrared footage of an object apparently venting material. The state agency CEFAA investigated for two years, involving astronomers, meteorologists and image analysts.
Official position
The case was solved: the object was identified as a scheduled passenger aircraft, and the “venting” as contrails dispersing in a high-humidity layer.

- An Airbus A340 on a scheduled flight — confirmed by flight plans, timing and position.
An exemplary investigation — and an exemplary result
This case is in the database as the best example of a rigorous state UAP investigation anywhere.
CEFAA worked on nine minutes of footage for two years. Astronomers, meteorologists, image analysts and air traffic specialists were involved. The case was publicly announced as unresolved before it was solved — and then the solution was publicly announced too.
The solution was a scheduled Airbus. The “venting of material” was contrails dispersing in a high-humidity layer, far more visible in infrared than in visible light.
Three conclusions
- A military crew, an excellent sensor and nine minutes of footage are not sufficient to identify an object.
- Identifying it required a flight plan — data the operators in the air simply did not have.
- An institution that publicly admits it could not solve something for two years, and then publishes the solution, is more credible than an institution that is never wrong.
Chile’s SEFAA, CEFAA’s successor, still requires original material for analysis — not screenshots from messaging apps, which destroy the data needed for the work. That is the standard the whole field should demand.
