Boianai
An Anglican missionary, thirty-eight co-signed witnesses, and figures that waved back
Anglican missionary William Gill and thirty-seven others watched a large luminous disc with figures on top for hours across two nights. Gill wrote the account immediately and had all witnesses sign it. When the observers waved, the figures appeared to wave back.
Official position
No state investigation. The RAAF received the report and did not resolve it.
Alternative hypotheses
- Venus and other bright planets seen through cloud, with the “figures” as an artefact of atmospheric distortion and expectation.
- A misidentified aircraft or ship's lights.
- A genuine unidentified object.
The best-attested testimonial case in the corpus
Boianai has something no other testimony-only case has: the account was written down immediately and countersigned by all thirty-eight witnesses. That eliminates, at a stroke, the drift and narrative accretion that ruins Roswell, Rendlesham and Westall.
The witness was a mission priest with no incentive toward the sensational, and the co-signers included local staff and villagers with no shared cultural template for flying saucers in 1959.
Why it still scores as testimony
There is no instrument. No photograph, no radar, no trace. The entire case rests on what thirty-eight people said they saw — recorded impeccably, but still only that.
The Venus objection, stated fairly
The sceptical explanation is Venus, which was bright and correctly placed. It accounts for a stationary luminous object over hours. It accounts far less well for the reported apparent structure and for the figures. Neither side can close the argument, because the one thing that would — a photograph, a bearing measurement — was never taken.
Boianai is the ceiling of what human testimony alone can achieve. That ceiling is lower than people expect, and knowing exactly where it sits is useful.
