Around two hundred pupils and teachers watch an object descend in broad daylight
In daylight, hundreds of pupils and teachers watched a grey disc-shaped object said to descend over nearby ground and then depart. Accounts of the site being secured by the military and of pupils being told to stay silent are not corroborated by any document.
Official position
No formal resolution. A HIBAL experimental balloon was indicated as a possible source.
Alternative hypotheses
- A HIBAL high-altitude balloon with payload — programme flight paths crossed the region; partially consistent.
- Collective conversion: a single observed source, with an interpretation constructed jointly afterwards.
Why “two hundred witnesses” is not “two hundred times the evidence”
Westall is the best test in this database of the intuition that witness count converts into evidential strength. It does not — at least not linearly.
Two hundred people watching the same phenomenon from the same place supply one observation replicated two hundred times, not two hundred independent measurements. If the source was a HIBAL balloon, then everyone saw a balloon — and their shared interpretation, negotiated over years, produced a disc.
Mass raises confidence that something was there. It does not raise confidence about what it was.
