A witness watched from about thirty metres as an object descended onto the terrace of his property, rested for several seconds and departed vertically. The gendarmerie secured the site the next day, and the GEPAN agency — now GEIPAN — ran the most extensive laboratory analysis programme in the history of UAP research.

GEIPAN classifies the case as D — unexplained after full investigation.

Alternative hypotheses

  • A trace from earlier technical activity on the property, such as a vehicle or construction equipment — examined and found inconsistent with the compaction profile and soil chemistry.
  • A hoax — hard to reconcile with the extent of the biochemical changes in plants, which were only detected in the analyses.
  • An unknown phenomenon of thermal and mechanical character.

Why this is the first case we should reopen

Trans-en-Provence has something Nimitz, Tehran and Washington do not: matter that can be examined again.

The handling was exemplary. Event on 8 January. Gendarmerie on site the next day, taking samples. GEPAN — an agency attached to the French space agency — takes over the case and commissions analyses from several independent laboratories, including the national agricultural research institute.

What the analyses showed

  • Significant soil compaction at the contact point, with a profile inconsistent with the load of a standard vehicle.
  • Traces of iron and oxides, phosphates and zinc.
  • Evidence of heating below 600 °C — important, because it excludes both fire and most jet propulsion.
  • In plants from the site and its surroundings, biochemical changes diminishing with distance from the centre of the trace, including changes in chlorophyll content.

That last point is decisive. The changes were graded — strongest at the centre, weaker at the edge. Such a distribution is very hard to fake and very hard to produce by accident.

What it does not prove

It does not prove a craft landed. It proves that a physical agent with a measurable thermal and mechanical profile acted on that ground, and that GEPAN could not attribute it to any known cause.

Research priority

If I had to name one case in the entire world corpus worth reopening with modern analytical methods — mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, isotopic analysis — it is Trans-en-Provence. The samples and documentation exist. No declassification is required.
