The “jellyfish” over Karelia, and the case a classified programme explained completely
A vast luminous phenomenon described as a “jellyfish” shedding rays toward the ground appeared over the city. The event produced a wave of reports across Karelia and led to the creation of a Soviet research programme.
Official position
The phenomenon corresponds to a Soyuz launch from the Plesetsk cosmodrome — a propellant release in the upper atmosphere, lit by a Sun already below the horizon.

The most important “explained” case in this database
Petrozavodsk stays in the corpus precisely because it is solved — and shows something no unresolved case can.
Thousands of people. Hours of panic. A vast, spectacular phenomenon utterly unlike anything the observers knew. Reports from two countries. And one simple, entirely sufficient technical explanation, unavailable to the witnesses for one reason only: the programme was secret.
The conclusion to apply to everything else
The vast scale of a phenomenon, the vast number of witnesses, and the complete inability of those witnesses to recognise it are not evidence of anything unusual. They are evidence that the observers did not know what was flying above them.
The same mechanism — a state’s own classified programme as the source of an “inexplicable” phenomenon — has to be considered at Mantell 1948, Lakenheath 1956, Cash–Landrum 1980, and in a number of contemporary cases.
