An airliner diverts after an encounter with lights, and a Mirage F1 is scrambled
The captain of a scheduled flight diverted to Valencia after bright red lights approached his aircraft. The Spanish air force scrambled a Mirage F1, whose pilot also reported a sighting.
Official position
Files declassified by the Spanish Ministry of Defence in the 1990s. No definitive resolution; a petrochemical flare and optical phenomena were among the explanations advanced.
Alternative hypotheses
- The gas flare at the Escombreras petrochemical installation, refracted through an inversion.
- Reflections in the cockpit glazing during night flight.
- A genuine physical object.
Why this matters beyond Spain
Manises is one of very few cases in which an airline captain took a real operational decision — an emergency diversion with passengers aboard — on the basis of a UAP sighting. That moves the event from curiosity to aviation safety incident.
Spain is also an example of a state that declassified its UFO files in an orderly way and made them available in the defence ministry’s digital library. It is a resource English-language literature has barely touched.
