Thousands of reports of a silent boomerang — and a group of pilots who admitted causing them
For several years thousands of people across the Hudson Valley reported a huge, silent, slow-moving boomerang of lights. A group of private pilots from a local airfield subsequently admitted flying formations of light aircraft with modified lighting, deliberately, on those nights.
Official position
No federal investigation. Local aviation authorities and the pilots themselves accounted for the formations.
Alternative hypotheses
- Formation flying by light aircraft with modified lights — admitted by the participants and consistent with the reports.
- A residual fraction of sightings on nights when no formation flew — never separately resolved.
The most useful solved wave in the database
Hudson Valley is worth more than most unresolved cases, because it is a controlled experiment nobody intended to run.
We know what was in the sky on many of those nights: several light aircraft flying in close formation with altered lighting. And we know what thousands of people, including police officers, reported seeing: a single enormous silent craft, often described as blotting out the stars.
What that tells us
Exactly what the Phoenix Lights argument turns on. When observers see a formation of lights moving together against a night sky, a large fraction will perceive and report a single solid object joining them. Not because they are careless, but because that is what human vision does with coherently moving points.
This is the closest thing the field has to a calibration measurement for mass sightings — and it says the intuition “so many people cannot all be wrong about a solid craft” is simply false.
The honest remainder
Not every night in the wave had a formation flying. A residual set of reports was never separately accounted for. That residue is small, poorly documented, and does not carry the wave — but pretending it does not exist would be the same error in the opposite direction.
